So I've reached a dilemma. I want to collect coins, but I don't know which way I should go about it. Buying them seems like a waste (especially since I'm litteraly buying money that's way more than it's face value) but they are usually worth much more if you buy them in a good grade, whereas with coin roll hunting, there's usually a very small chance you'll find any uncirculated or proof coins, and and even if you do they are probably not in the best condition. It's hard for me because I want to make a profit selling and investing in coins, but I also want to collect them and fill up albums.

I have heard it time and time again if you are trying to make money or invest in coins it hardly ever works that way so that shouldn't even be a plan.

From what I've heard, it can work, if you invest in something like high grade classic key dates, and are willing to hold them for decades.
I have also heard, though with much less certainty, of some types of bulk submissions of modern bullion coins being profitable.

Neither of those, of course, is a particularly useful option if you don't already have at least a six-figure fortune to invest into it to start with (seven or eight figures is preferable).

If you do have a six-figure (or larger) fortune free for investment, you might as well do some coin roll hunting on the side; it won't matter much either way.
If anything, it's probably a better way of filling up some modern coin albums (e.g. LMCs) than trying to hunt for each coin in shops or on ebay.

There's no need to limit yourself to just one avenue. I roll search & buy. There's ways to make profit quickly at it. You just have to figure them out for yourself. I'm not too far off from retirement, so I don't make risky investments. Pretty much everything I buy now is below market value & I could flip for immediate profit or not get hurt much if metals drop some.
Rest in Peace

The first thing you have to consider is what do you really want to do . Investing in coins to make a profit is not something I would recommend . Most of us would say that's like a fantasy in another realm . So I would suggest just being an old fashion coin collector and enjoy the hobby by buying and finding the coins that interest you . Go right ahead and fill those albums , and have fun .

This is all good advice. You can have fun coin roll hunting while potentially finding something to sell or fill your albums with. You can also take your time and try to cherry pick vendors, both online and in person, for coins to sell for immediate profit or to hold for potential long-term gain.

My advise is to define what amount of profit you are trying to make. If you are thinking of huge profit that coin is a once or twice in a lifetime event at best unless you have unlimited resources to buy coins. Remember that the person you purchase from likely knows the value and is also thinking profit.

If you plan to enjoy coin collecting or coin flipping you would have more fun using all means of obtaining coins. Always go for the dream but also always be prepared to accept many disappointments and set backs along the way. I suggest that you invest in a couple of good metal detectors and hit some old settlement sites, it is great fun, excersise and a much higher possibility of finding a real treasure coin that did not already have a mark-up to pay.

Anyway you choose to coin hunt is the right way as long as you have fun doing it.
and good luck.

It all depends on what you are looking for and the effort you want to expend. I can tell you with certainly that you will not get rich roll hunting. You might come out a little ahead unless you assign a money value to your time and then it will be a money loser for sure.

Hunting will provide limited results, with large amounts of looking you might come across the occasional silver dime, quarter or half dollar, but there is no way you are going to fill a book any time soon if ever.

Nickels will provide a pretty good chance of eventually filling a book or at least coming close on Jeffersons. There are a few hard to find issues that you may never find but you can come pretty close with a ton of searching.

Pennies are going to be pretty easy to collect all the circulation issues from the 50's on, older than that are getting pretty unusual to find in circulation or roll searching.

The biggest problem you are going to have is the acquisition and disposal of enough coins to actually find your targets. Most banks these days will not provide large amounts of coins without accounts and prior notice. To get rid of the chum is even harder. CoinStar will take them with either a 10% fee or by you getting a gift card for Apple or other retailer. Some banks still have coin machines for public or account holder use but these are getting pretty rare.

I'd say it's not a certainty; people have been known to find rare gold in coin rolls.

Even so, you would probably have a better chance of getting rich by buying lottery tickets instead, and would definitely have a better change of getting rich by going around with a metal detector.

I've NEVER heard of that. The only gold coins found in rolls are those fake, seeded rolls on ebay.

Everybody on earth knows what gold is. The probability of someone putting a gold con in a roll by accident is nil. Any banks getting ahold of the gold coin will reject it by weight and scrap it. So, I wish you luck in finding gold in a roll.

I am going to have to disagree somewhat with the above. The way that I make money and collect coins is pretty easy. For one I really only collect errors coins from the Cherry Pickers Guide. That being said there are many error coins on ebay that the seller does not know are error coins. On top of that you have to wait and wait and wait in till you see an undiscovered error that looks to be in awesome condition. It will usually take me about 4 months just to get 20 coins which I then submit to PCGS. My goal from that 20 is to sell 19 coins to get all my money back for grading, shipping and the coins themselves and keep the best one of the 20 for myself! Over the last year I have been focusing on 1972 doubled dies. Through this process I have the only 1972 FS 103 MS 67, and the Top pops for FS 102, FS 107 and FS 108. All basically free because the other 19 paid for all expenses. By the way the MS 67 is worth $1,250

It's all very simple. Only buy coins where you pay less than their face value.
This way you'll always be ahead.

I've had some success with buying bulk foreign coins from flea markets. I've gotten Canadian key dates, silver, and sometimes if you get a lot of one type of coin, you can sell it as a lot and recoup some of your money. I usually keep silver, pre 1940s, or designs I just genuinely enjoy from lots like this. You may even find some older US coins in lots like this as well.

Yes, gold coins are found in rolls from time to time, mostly foreign gold. Not often but it does happen. I've seen it from time to time on other forums over the last ten years. They've also been found in Coinstar reject trays. That is, if you can believe everything you see on the 'net.
