A close-up would be most helpful, but it sure looks like someone with a hammer and a vaguely D-shaped punch was bored: PMD.

. Your coin is damaged. Someone simply assaulted it with some type of pick or punch. Possibility a leather working tool.

Yes thanks for the additonal pics. The use of a punch is confirmed. This 1964-D half is made from silver so don't spend it, but I would be surprised if it is worth much more than melt.

Just was wondering what it was possibly that could have caused it.Strange kinda we think,my better half she viewed it through my loupe an said they looked like D's.I admit they do look like D's to me now also.Power of suggestion? Not sure.I am not that familiar with the minting process so I thought we should run it by some experienced eyes for assessment. Thanks everybody.

Someone who was board with a pick started punching those holes on the coin.as said above, now it is only worth the melt value.

Looks like an Ice Pick or nail punch in someone's hand who didn't like JFK, personal attack.

It is sad to even consider that, but you could be right.

I have read that during this time period that the Mint Marks were hand punched. Is it somehow possible a disgruntled employee of the Denver Mint back around the terrible assassination of in my opinion our last real, an greatest President.Took his or her opportunity to forgive the pun,"Make his Mark" on history also by defacing Mr. Kennedy's Bust on the obverse of the first year commemorating his legacy as our great Commander and Chief.Possible?
