About 20 years ago I began my Poland "one from every king" collection. For Kazimir III (1333-70), I eventually obtained a tiny denar, 11 mm and 0.25 g, and these days I can only appreciate it with a magnifying glass. So I resolved to keep an eye out for a larger coin at some point. Many disractions ensued. I just won this larger (20 mm) kwartnik at auction. I've not received it yet, but I think this will take care of me for a while. As best I can tell, all of Kazimir's coins are relatively scarce and in high demand. Obv: King seated, facing. Scepter in left hand, globus cruciger in right. MONETA KAZIMIRI Rev: Eagle. REGIS POLONIE K (Krakow mint) Kopicki 338, Gum. 350  Edited by tdziemia

Sweet pick-up. Probably easier to see, and harder to lose, than its tiny counterpart. Congrats.

We don't see many medieval coins from Poland here In addition to giedrius, I know that posters pepactonius and spence have shown some Polish/Lithuanian coins from the 1500s on the "How Far Back Can We Go" thread. (I realize that some might not consider the 1500s medieval). Before 1400, medieval Polish coins in nice grade tend to be kind of pricey (well, $200 and upwards ... ) |

Scarce & wonderful example of one of the tougher Polish kings to obtain.
For those who may not know (such as myself before looking it up) a kwartnik is apparently 1/4 of a skojec... but then I had to look up what a skojec was... and then in turn look up what is a grzywna!

@tdz, I see that my oldest Polish coin (i.e. listed in Kopicki) is from the reign of Wladyslaw Warnenczyk (1434-1444 AD).
In looking at your coin a little closer, I agree with you attribution of Kopicki #338--the mintmark K is very visible in the rev legend. I also note that Kopicki lists your coin as an R5 (26-120 pieces available), so congrats again on this super pick-up!

I thought it was Warnenczyk but I saw other examples later and got confused. (I took some new photos of it today; will try to post for attribution.) |

As this is an area of focus for me, I have Polish medievals back to the reign of Boleslaw II (1058-1079). For rulers before Kasimir III they are all denars. I think one from the reign of Boleslaw IV (1146-73) was posted as a "near miss" for the "Going Back in Time by Decades" thread. I've commented on EddieDiz' thread that I wish the craftsmanship in Poland were as nice as what we see from Hungary in the medieval period, but this is generally not the case, though there are some interesting designs. For sure there will be some weeks when no one is able to post, but might be nice to have them all in one thread.  Do you recommend that I start it on the World Coins subforum (as we will eventually get past 1600), or keep it here? I suppose we could run here through Batory (1580s) and start anew with Sigismund III on the World Coin subforum. And when you said "post pics" of each ruler, I am assuming you mean pics of coins of each ruler? (Or coins bearing their likeness, as there are some modern series like this). Edited by tdziemia

I'll leave final determination up to the mods, but I agree with splitting it into two threads for the purpose of staying within our somewhat 1600 AD dividing line. As far as pics, I was definitely thinking about coins. See, for example, this earlier thread of mine: http://goccf.com/t/269713 . In the end, it is your thread, so you make the rules.
