The darker areas are carbon spots. Not a good thing on a coin.

The "L" and "I" of "LIBERTY" are damaged, from a well placed hit. The color of the coin doesn't look right to me. Maybe it was cleaned at some point?

The L and I are flattened from PMD. Coin looks cleaned and damaged as well.

I agree that the color is unpleasant and there are a couple pretty deep dings and scratches. On the other hand, it is a nice coin to find (and therefore pay face value for), but just not one that has been treated kindly.
