Hi All, I am not a serious collector but a long time ago I had a 1818kn penny, but I gave it away, anyway like many of the public I have been caught up in saving Beatrix Potter 50p's of which I have several good examples so I have searched online for their worth and found for example one being advertised online for £200 yet it could be bought in a display pack on the same page for £29.99 so it would appear (to me) that some dealers are out to con people, my question is, who can an amateur collector trust and where are the truthful prices found, regards Robert

"Truthful prices", or the true worth of something, is often found in how much someone is willing to pay. That being said, you do not want to pay more than others are paying. The sold listing on ebay are considered a good way to check the current value of something before you overspend on it.

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Price discrepancies like that may be due to somebody trying to con you, but also could be due to other factors. For example, the Beatrix Potter 50p coins appear in CuNi ( cupro nickel ) the standard metal circulation coins are made from. They also appear as silver proofs which initially look very similar, but are worth a great deal more. An out of production CuNi 50p in presentation pack could well be around £30. Check The Royal Mint's website before buying. I would expect a CuNi 50p in a presentation pack to be around £10 + p&p. Error coins I would expect to pay a fair bit more depending on the error. Beware of fake errors made by scammers - ebay is full of bogus error rubbish in the modern UK decimal section.

to the Forum! with all the above. I've put a few recent commemorative 50p coins on ebay myself, starting at face value (50p plus postage) and the most I've had for any one coin is about £3. Several have failed to sell altogether. I can't believe that anyone ever gets hundreds of pounds for the standard circulating versions of the Beatrix Potter coins.

Hi everybody and thanks for the lovely welcome, and for the good information, I did get a mail from CCF saying my post had been moved to another forum, although having followed the link I cannot find anything on the page that shows which forum this is so I guess it will be hard to find if I need to find it again. So thanks again, and I am sure that I'll be back, regards Robert
