I found this 1964 proof set, could this be the set that is so valuable? Sorry the picture isn't the best, I could zoom in on some of this image if need be. Edited by Rabbithole1 09/19/2018 10:35 pm

This is an aftermarket set in a commercial holder. I see no particular premium here.

The SMS are not proof coins. They are like the 1965-1967 SMS sets. Just checked one on PCGS and they are normal dies. They are not the reverse of 1965. They also don't look like fresh reverse dies either. If they are, then the hubs must have been worn down before the reverse dies were created. (The strong tail feathers is not on this reverse) http://images.PCGS.com/CoinFacts/25...0506_max.jpgDon't open this link on a cell phone. It is huge.

The holder the coins are in.. I found the name of FINALLY. Its referred to as a capital holder (im sure you all knew..I didnt). My picture is terrible, the coins are beautiful..the Kennedy is gorgeous..but the nickel is breathtaking ..to me anyway. The seller of these is an older gentlemen, 80 + , retired minister. He had the 1963 proof set and the 1964 proof set , the casing is the exact same.

Yes, that is an aftermarket set in a Capital Plastics coin holder. Looks like they're proof coins (doubt they're SMS). I'd keep them, as if you went to sell them you wouldn't get much. It's the 1964 SMS coins that are worth a lot, not the standard 1964 proofs.

$52 is over DOUBLE what I pay for a 1964 set in mint cello! If that's yours, the seller is very, very, very happy...

Most do not want an aftermarket Capital holder (does not add value), and the sets in the original cello are more desirable. These are about $20 or so.

I think the Capital holders are just fine. In all likelihood, those were cut out of one single set by the original owner and placed directly in the holder. It's a great-looking set, but not really worth $52 and certainly not the SMS coins that are so valuable (and pretty much all accounted for if I remember correctly). The only thing you may want to look for is the "Accented Hair" version of the '64 Kennedy half proof. There are a couple markers for it, and it is more valuable than a normal proof half of that year.

Thank you all for your input. I'm obviously new to this ..and its very complicated, which is why I love it ..yet, many people have different "facts". Thank goodness for this forum! Here are a few questions I have: 1. Ive heard that an SMS set is better then a proof set in 1964. And I have also heard the proof set is better then the SMS? 2. Knowing I have the proof set, why wouldnt I break up a proof set? Not trying to..but I'm curious, because the coins in this set are so much better than the ones I see at auction. So I'm confused! 3.Ill admit I am Red Book addict! (like a junkie:) Stuck on page 377. 1964 special strikes.

SMS sets were released by the Mint from 1965 through 1967 (three years) in place of proof sets. These coins are not scarce, as far as I know. The SMS-strike coins (noticeably different from proofs of the time) of 1964 were never actually released by the Mint, but instead found among the estate of the former Mint director and subsequently sold at auction. These were never intended to be released and may have served as test strikes or specimens for the upcoming 1965 SMS production. Thus, they are very rare and very expensive. What you have is a proof set, normal for the year 1964. I see no issue in breaking the set up if you wish, because none of the coins are particularly special as they are (barring an Accented Hair Kennedy). It is great that you have delved into the Red Book! It packs a ton of important info into a small book. If you are interested in a particular coin or series, there are more specific books you can get (many from Whitman and Q. David Bowers).
