What causes this? I didn't think Peace dollars ever got the PL look like Morgan dollars. Or is this just a seller with good lighting of their picture? The front doesn't look near as white as the reverse though. Edited by LibertyEagle20 09/19/2018 9:25 pm

NGC has graded a few Peace dollars PL. The graded PL that I saw a photo of appeared to be a streach to get the PL designation. The posted coin appears to have strong luster. As you noted, some contrast on the reverse. If the coin did have some mirror fields, it would be a cool coin to own.

Nice example. The milk spots kick the top 10% of buyers off the list. I don't think this would make PL. I'm certain it should make 64 and that's still darned nice. As long as the photos haven't been played with, that is.

Any reason why so few business strike Peace dollars have PL features? Is it simply a numbers game? Or were the dies inferior to those used for Morgan dollars?

Quote:Any reason why so few business strike Peace dollars have PL features? Is it simply a numbers game? Or were the dies inferior to those used for Morgan dollars? I think the sculpt is to "blame." To what I have seen, Peace dollars don't have large flat and smooth fields like a Morgan does, they have a bit of a grainy look and a slight curve. With that in mind, I think no matter how hard you struck or how much you polished a Peace die, the fields just aren't conducive to a proof-like look in terms of flashy mirrors. All opinion but that's my guess

Beautiful. Speaking of Moonlight Mint, does anyone here buy their "fantasy" products? They're intriguing to me but would they ever have any value? This 1964 Peace dollar seems to push the limits since there actually were 1964 Peace dollars minted but all were destroyed.

Copy or not, that '64 Peace has that Wow Factor. I Wouldn't mind having one in a bullion round.

I'm hoping the 2021 Peace dollar is as spectacular as the Carr dollar shown.
