I've been CRH for half dollars the past 2 1/2 years. Until very recently, I hadn't really heard of people running into large batches of coins from the current or a recent year until now.

As some of you know, I found a batch of 111 2018-D halves in a box recently. Another box produced 24, and my last box had 9. All of them brilliant, and untouched coins. I've seen others with similar stories of late.

I was perusing the forum and found this story too, where a member got a whole box (1,000 coins) of brand new 2017-D halves in one of their CRH boxes:

I've also heard of stories of others finding full boxes of other Uncirculated (non NIFC year) halves this year. I don't recall the exact years (I think one was 1995-D, maybe?), but I don't remember seeing it happen before to this extent.

So what is the explanation for this? My guess is the FED is running low on halves, and has had to go to the vault to get whatever's available (even NIFCs). Is this a plausible explanation, or is there something else playing into this?

Let's build on this a bit and see if anyone knows home much of the current half-dollar "circulation" is due to searching rather than actual commerce. I would guess that at least half is due to searching rather than purchases.

As for your questions there could be several answers. Are unsold mint products being dumped into circulation? Are collectors or other recipients dumping? Have they decided to make halves for circulation again? (Possible, probable and improbable in that order.)

Possible.

This is where it gets tricky. The FED would never have NIFCs just sitting in their vault. What would actually happen is that the FED vault is emptied and they place an order for half dollars with the Mint. It is the Mint that ends up shipping whatever is available, which would have to be unsold NIFC bags and rolls.

If it is true and the demand continues, it is quite possible that 2018 and/or 2019 become high mintage years because the mint will eventually run out of what it has already minted.

Crap, I meant to put the word "MINT" in my OP, not "FED." And now it's too late for me to change it.

I've always wondered about the unsold mint products being dumped into circulation. While collectors themselves might not be dumping, it's entirely possible that relatives have done some dumping for them (and then gotten scolded out later)...

As for the last question, I went to the US Mint's website for 2018 mintage figures and was quite shocked at what I saw for the half dollar mintages to date... https://www.usmint.gov/about/produc...s-production?

No worry, as long as we are in agreement.
