I have a George the III silver coin which I am unable to identify. Would anyone be able to give me some direction, I am not a collector just going through some of my fathers bits and pieces as he passed away.
Regards

Charlie

Hello Charlie and !

This is not a coin but a commemorative medal produced on the occasion of the death of King George III in 1820. It looks very interesting. I'm sure there will be someone on the Forum who will have some information about it.

This one on ebay looks similar:

First off, welcome.

From the size I thought at first it ought to be a Bank of England 5 shilling (dollar) token struck using a Spanish or Spanish colonial 8 reales as the flan, but it does in fact appear to be a medal.

It does appear to have been banged up, but it is also likely to be silver. A 200 year old silver medal even in that condition should command some premium over bullion to the right person.

Spinks Catalogue of British Commemorative Medals 1588 to present day ( pub 1984 ) lists a 40mm medal by T Wyon in both copper and white metal to commemorate the death of George III. No description or image is given, so this might or might not be your medal. The other 3 medals listed are not 40mm.

Sorry this is all I can give but it might help you with further research.

Found it! The above is your medal. The Royal Collection has a copy.

Again it appears in copper and white metal, not silver. I am not skilled enough to confirm the metal in your example is not silver, but I don't think it is. Maybe another forum member can help. Given my catalogue is so old, the values it gives are now meaningless.
