The revamped museum is now called the Bank of Canada museum. When I went, it wasn't crowded at all. It seems somewhat geared for kids. I can picture a lot of class trips through here. They do have some cool stuff as john100 mentioned. There is also the 1911 silver dollar, which was really cool to see. Admission is free. It is definitely worth checking out.
The gift shop has some interesting things. However, they were selling used currency i.e. the 1974 series $2 in various conditions up to EF. All of them were selling for around $8-10 I believe. It was definitely more expensive than what you would find at a coin show, but most tourists don't realize that. I was told a local Ottawa dealer supplies them. The dealer probably buys them for face, marks them up 100% to sell to the museum, which then marks them up another 100% to sell to the tourists.
