Hi all,

i am currently off work recovering from spinal surgery so decided to start cataloguing all my coins. I was given a load from my grandad and found a few I couldnt identify. I will post the others separately but this one has me particularly intrigued.

it appears to be german or austrian but after a solid week of scouring the internet I can find absolutely nothing relating to it.

it was minted in 2007, is 11mm and 0.5g 585gold.

one on side is an image of mozart with musical score behind him, and the words "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart" and on the reverse is an eagle with the words "1000 Jahre Osterreich".

any help would be greatly appreciated

its a pain that all the coins my grandad gave me seem to have come from european collections, which I can find very little relating to them. he insists he gets them all through windsor london and westminster mints but they have nothing relating to any of them

The three mints you have named are well known for selling hideously overpriced objects which will never regain a fraction of their purchase price. Wean him off them if you can.

TNG - thanks, that was the closest I could find, but my coin doesn't have the date below it and that ebay listing doesn't show the reverse of the coin. very similiar though.

alganbagerap - yes I am aware, that doesn't help me identify the coin though lol

Each of those mints may have a "Contact us" link on their websites where you could give that a try.
I found one link for Westminster Mint I think. They had one.

If you do have any luck, please update the thread as somebody else may benefit from it down the road.

If my math is right is the gold value of this piece about $11?
Presuming it is 1/2 gram or .585 gold and not "plated".

Hi Albert,

ive valued it at around £10 purely scrap value (£20/gram for gold roughly) and no it is not gold plated.

TNG, I have the next 10 weeks (minimum) off work while I recover from a spinal fusion operation, my intention is to finish my catalogue off, and hopefully using this website as a rescource, I hope to gather as much information about the coins as possible which I will happily make available on here.

like I said, I have 10 weeks stuck on a sofa with very little else to do, and coins seem to have peeked my interest

Also, I am not really bothered by the value of the coins, more the history and story behind them. my grandad loved his coins, and he chose them for a reason so the more I can learn about the coins, the better I can understand my grandfather...which to me is worth more than the value of the coins

Then they are priceless, I like your attitude. Wishing you fond memories.

I don't know that there would be any history. Private mints and banks make great assortments of coins and collectibles without any history at all behind them.
Yours could be just one of a series depicting the likeness of famous composers or maybe various famous people of Austria.
Coins with a genuine history would not likely be items such as this one.
Perhaps lessons could be learned by reading an Atlas of World History showing Austria, Vienna and Salzburg or perhaps reading a biography of the composer himself.
i don't intend to put down or belittle the coin, as far as actual history goes, I don't see any. Although the composer and his cities and country certainly do.

Sounds like a good way to take it easy while you heal yourself.

Excellent! It is the preferred way, so each topic can focus on one item.
