This one has me puzzled. It is a generic average strike and circulation 1942 Lincoln Cent. There is clearly a gap in the obverse rim. There is no evident PMD that explains the gap. The edge has a very weak diagonal raised line (NE to SW) connecting both rims, The corresponding area on the reverse has slightly raised metal at the rim. My initial guess was the beginning of a retained collar Cud, but I can't find another break anywhere else on the circumference of the coin, and a retained collar Cud should at least minimally elongate the coin. There are two laminations on the reverse, one in the area matching the obverse rim gap. There also may be weak evidence of clashed dies. Help!

Wow! Good question. Had to think this one out in different ways, by elimination. I Don't think it was a collar problem, broken/cracked, incomplete or even damaged collar. The rim offset area wouldn't have formed like that, too complete. It isn't PMD nor is it a clip. Or is it?

Here's where I ended up, a thin-rolled edge blank. That then, even tho was completely circular to go through the Upset Mill and have the proto-rim formed didn't have enough metal on THE ONE SIDE to fill out evenly. The proto-rim may have been incomplete as seen by your last close-up. Speaking to clashes, see none. The blank looked like this:

Only logical explanation I got!

@Crazyb0, the more I wrestle with this one, the more I'm starting to wonder if it could be a lamination. It looks to me as if the edges of the gap might be too jagged for it to be a clip.

There is a lamination on the reverse, running toward the reverse rim directly opposite the gap. Is it possible for a lamination to extend around the edge to the obverse? Could the added metal on the reverse rim be a fold from a lamination?
