I have seen all of these great coins lately with a hippo on the reverse. I thought it was about time that I had one so I just bought one in Today's Naville sale. It does not hurt that it is ex: Dattari and is a plate coin. I also really like the bust of tiberius on the obverse. It will be an interesting addition to my 12 Caesars collection.

Please post your coins with Hippos or other interesting animals, or coins of Tiberius.

Egypt, Alexandria. Dattari. Tiberius, 14-37 Obol circa 19-20 (year 6), Æ 20.1mm., 5.67g. Laureate head r. Rev. TIBEPIOY Hippopotamus standing r.; in exergue, L Geissen -. RPC 5087 (this coin cited). Dattari-Savio Pl. 4, 103 (this coin).
Brown tone, About Very Fine.
From the Dattari collection.

Impressive, Andrew: two plate coins from important collections, posted within four days of each other. Well done.

Don't see many Hippo's, and a plate coin too. Very nice.

Lovely coin orfew!

Often wondered why these African animals were portrayed on Roman coins such as rhino, giraffe, and hippo...I assume it was because of their usage in gladiatorial battles and was probably a big wow factor for the plebs who had never seen anything like it before?..Paul
