The single example I have came at no cost, which is good given the problems with it. I may purchase a proof or somethong in the future, but that's as far as I can envision delving into ASEs. There are enough actual coins to keep me busy at my stage of collecting for a long time.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Quote: Pro's and con's are there but in the end the American silver eagle is the silver dollar of my time. I love me some Morgans and Peace dollars, but as a child of the 80s, this is my sentiment exactly. I like the design as is, both obverse and reverse, although the original WLH reverse is more inspired. I have a few: a 2013 and a 2015 in capsules (my children's birth years; will be adding a 2019 to this duo next year). A 2017 in my 7070, and the beat-up 2013 that is sometimes a pocket piece. My kids also each have a few from their birth years, that were given to them as gifts, put away for them.

I have bought and sold some ASEs. Currently do not have any.
I like them toned or perfect. I tried to do a year set but was having trouble finding perfect examples.
If the day comes that I have some extra money, I would love to own a gem BU set.

The ASE is a pretty coin with a classic design that's easy to take for granted. It's not unlike the gold buffalo ( Buffalo nickel), which struck up with beautiful detail on a large, soft gold coin. I own a few ASE's and I always will, but I can buy Maples, Britannias, Krugerrands, and Philharmonics for about a buck cheaper than the American Eagle, so I have no reason to own any real quantity of the Eagle. I bought a 1oz platinum Eagle as well, and the obverse just totally drops the ball IMO. Without a doubt the ugliest obverse "art" of any bullion coin I own.

Speaking as a British collector, I like the ASE. I have four normal bullion ones in my collection. I don't see the need to get a new one for every year, but would like a reverse proof sometime - I think it looks stunning!

Some folks, it's all they will buy, money bags, they like that they can usually get straight up spot price for them. I only own one whole roll, but have found some in junk bins, aftermarket hologram, but none that are colorized. The proofs are nice, I have some, and also two of the RP sets. I noticed they are putting these in some of the mint set offerings more often. I to would rather have the SML, but these days .. I don't know, to much to collect, rather than pony up for a 20 oz. roll of silver I'd just as well have a 1/4 of gold.

Personally, I consider ASEs bullion produced by the US Mint with a really nice design. Quote: I never would have guessed you felt that way. It is not like you have one as your avatar or something. Yeah - I'd have never thought that!

ASE... "All Simulated Excitement", aka: Hype
Do have a couple, I think... one in my 18th-21st Century type set, maybe a trash one in the stack, been a while since looking through the junk silver. If less than Mint/Proof condition it's just junk silver melt value.

Quote: Do have a couple, I think... one in my 18th-21st Century type set... Same here. As I said earlier, one in the 7070 and another in the 2016 Reagan C&C set. BU and proof. Good enough for me.

Well, I'll stick up for the ASE. I like the design just the way it is, but then, Walking Liberty is my favorite design of all US coins, so I would. Its only other virtue, besides being silver and pretty, is that I buy one every year, usually at the first coin show of the year, from a dealer who is glad to sell it.
