I can not recall seeing a reed quite like this on my other Washington quarters.
Does the reed seem over done or odd?

The teeth look more like fine tooth gear teeth than coin.

I don't have the name for this but I've seen it before. Cool find.

The quarter is in a typical sealed US Mint SMS package. I wonder if this qualifies as some type of mint "error" ?

SilverDollar2017: Do you have any idea what this type reed is called?

SMS were the proof coins from 1965-1967. They are struck twice making them have the nicer strike/reeds. Nothing special for a SMS. They should all look like that.
Rest in Peace

The quarters were clad, not silver 65 on. To have a lot of copper showing, or even an uneven layering effect is normal. That is how the strike pressures from two strikes BTW, affects the metals forced outwards as well as up and down against the collar.

Did some research on this and found this is normal for SMS coins.

I am totally aware of the changeover from silver to clad planchettes. I have other 1965 SMS sets and the reeding does not look as pronounced.

Well you got a good one. No premium for this though. Coin graders focus on the surface of the coin, not the edge.

I contacted David Lawrence Rare Coins and they are suggesting I submit it because of how pronounced the reed is, it may or may not be something. So... PCGS here is it comes !
