The Canadian penny is weird. It was not a recent purchase; I've had it for years in a 2x2, but I was moving it to a new one so I left it out. It has surfaces like a proof-like coin, but with different luster, almost a "sheen", and a die crack running from the lower left leaf tip through the 9 in the date out to the rim. On the obverse, there are some slightly darker areas on the bust. The color is unusual (from a US cent point of view), resembling a more reddish brassy version of a modern Lincoln Cent. My eyeball grade is MS63 but I don't understand the surfaces or color. Every attempt I make to photograph it with any detail results in it looking flat and does not capture the in-hand (or in this picture) look.

1/48 Thaler = 1/48th of (1/14 of 233.86g), or approx. 0.348g of .890 silver. 1 Thaler = approx. 16.7g silver.

In 1765, a buyer in Frankfurt could expect to pay the equivalent of 8 grams of silver per 1 kg of pork, or 5.82g of silver per 1 kg of beef. (Elsas MJ, 1940)

The base denominator was 288 Pfennige - Ein Reichsthaler. 1/48 Thaler was equivalent to 6 Pfennige.

Therefore, the buyer would need approximately 102 Pfennige. This could be done in two coins: a 1/3 Einen Thaler, and a 1/48 Einen Thaler; to purchase the 1 kg of beef. It could also be done (clumsily) with 102 Pfennige, or 2 of the 1/6 Einen Thaler coins and a 1/48, ... so on. Or a full Thaler could be paid, and change made, or the amount of beef purchased increased to match the payment total.
