Coin collecting provides me with many avenues to explore.
While I don't expect to become an expert on oriental coins, I feel compelled to take a look at the subject. In doing so, I'm finding that the regions now known as Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have a common history with China.
These coins are generally referred to as Cash Coins, which some sources interpret as square holed money. Until the very end of production they were cast rather than struck, requiring the admirer to bend the accepted rules of condition and patina.
Prior to the Yi Dynasty, Koreans wishing to read and write had to do so in Chinese, - severely restricting this luxury to the wealthy class. In 1440, King Sejong, 4th monarch of the Yi Dynasty, commissioned scholars to develop a written language for his citizens that only spoke Korean.
I'm sure you can appreciate how much this would make everyday life more pleasant for the working class, as well as benefit commerce and the arts. And in light of how rulers control the dissemination of information, King Sejong must have had great faith in the loyalty of his subjects.
The Chinese were already using a movable type printing press as early as 1322, capable of using 1000,000 characters. (At this point you may want to contact your History teacher and ask what may have inspired Johannes Gutenberg.) In pursuit of the written language, Sejong's scholars wisely chose to forgo the nearly infinite glyphs of the Chinese language in favor of a simple alphabet of 28 characters (17 consonants and 11 vowels.) This undoubtedly contributed to making the Koreans one of the most literate people on earth (over 98%).

My XX Century Mexican type set continues to grow. My latest is this 2 Peso crown from 1921. I was quite happy with the face details as when her nose gets worn, well she looks rather goofy.
