Thank you for your thank you's. Honestly Incirlick was a real dump. All quonset huts and crappy old buildings and no air conditioning anywhere. For a USAF base not having a golf course was tortuous. But booze was cheap, very cheap, and we managed to have a good time anyways. I liked working midnights because at the time the base was desolate. Overnight most of all. I played 3 different sports and was very good at all of them so I wouldn't be at roll call due to practice and then after just draw weapons and ammo and disappear. Mostly I walked perimeters with canine.
This love of forlorn work hours I brought on when I joined state PD and then Chicago PD. I loved slithering along dark streets with my lights off hunting bad guys just like I did in Turkey but Turkey back then was so dark at night. I remember. I gave some big surprises to BGs thru the years. I'm talking bad ones. Thieves, armed robbers, rapists, gangsters.....Anyway I digress.
So the year after I left Incirlick America poured millions into the place and brought it up to spec just like a real USAF base. They closed it up due to terrorism tho we had plenty when I was there. I had a buddy tossed off a 4'th floor balcony by Islamic terrorists because he had married a Muslim girl.
Still, all in all, it was a great time to be alive. We were young and dumb and didnt let terrorism ruin the party. Turkey is loaded with History. History was in the very air, boy, the coins I could have collected. I saw the entire country taking every temp duty "TDY" I could. And 40 years later when my son joined USAF where did they send him ? But by then they didn't allow the troops off the base like we could. And back in the '70's the $USD was king because it took $USD to buy the real bank money which was gold.
Its where I learned the value of gold. Cousins would marry for it to keep it in the family. Boy the coins I could have bought.
