1826 1 Batz, Canton Bern, Switzerland. Really pleased with this one. This is a VF+ coin but the seller (and bidders) must have thought the weakness was due to wear and not strike, and he also missed the neat thing about this particular coin...if you look around, you might notice it....

...yes, the coin is struck over an existing issue. You can see the lettering from the undertype around the rim; on the reverse, the undertype coin's legend of MONETA ... is plainly visible. You can see "ghost lettering" throughout the obverse legend, both in between and underneath the second strike.

Many of these 1 Batz (and the 2 1/2 and 5 Batzen) coins were struck over late 1700s Canton Bern issues - most commonly a 1796 or 1798 in the case of the 1 Batz. I have not verified which undertype this one is yet.

Very interesting addition!! When you figure out the original host coin I'd love to see what it was.

One of those things I put off but finally I found a Sudbury Big Nickel ( silver dollar sized medal )
and bought it to add to my Canadian Nickel collection.
Wanted the 30 foot one but had to settle for this.
best looking one I've seen in awhile and the price was acceptable.





Shipping was horrendous for the 30 footer! so I passed on it.

The 1826 1 Batz is overstruck on a 1793 to 1798 1 Batz, also from Bern, see for instance KM#87
The 179 is clear enough under a glass, the last digit is obliterated mostly by the word BATZ

It has been flipped (the obverse of the current coin was overstruck on the reverse of the original.)

This was not uncommon following the currency concordance (treaty) of 1825, in which 6 of the larger cantons agreed to simplify what was then an exceptionally complex currency system by standardizing to a uniform currency. In an attempt to encourage conversion to the standard (wherein 1 Frank was still 10 Batzen, meaning it wasn't "new" at all) coins were restamped and overstruck by their respective cantons. Obviously this included previous canton-issued coinage, and even (very rarely) foreign issues, but it did little to stop the fact that more than two-thirds of the coins circulating in Switzerland weren't Swiss coins of ANY canton, but rather foreign issues.

Current reverse (original obverse) had the legend MONETA REIPUB BERNENSIS below the bear, the denomination (CR 4 or 4 Kreuzer) in exergue.

Current obverse (original reverse) had the date, and the legend DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT (The Lord will provide), a reference to Genesis 22:8 -- namely,

"And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together."
