yes, to get some shiny BU specimens mixed in with the well-circulated..

the kicker here is that those two coins were a gift. originally they were a sudden potential purchase. right time & place for me; I claimed dibs & got 'em, the coin shop owner said 'no charge, this one's on the house'.

I'm continuing my classic commemorative upgrade project. My latest addition is a 1922 Grant Star in PCGS MS65. This replaces a PCGS MS63 I'd purchased 6 years ago.

I had second thoughts on this coin before eventually bidding (well, and a bit even after bidding ), as the pictures on the auction site weren't very complimentary. However, when I received the coin today I was very pleased. The obverse has some very interesting toning, while the reverse has very light and scattered toning that I find quite attractive.

These just arrived today - a pair of slabbed of 4 Maravedis, No Date (1544-1564). Era of Carlos & Johanna to Philip II. Both are NGC Certified. One "Details Fine" with an anchor counter stamp the other straight graded at F-15 has the key counter stamp.

These two go along nicely with my one raw example (and nicer), which my Dad bought for me on a trip to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico back in the early 1980's. This when I was just getting really serious about collecting coins, and was the only coin he ever bought for me. A link to that one, along with some really good background on these "First Coins Struck in the Americas"...

Nice contrast between the MS65 Grant half and the F15 Santo Domingo.
Both coins are fantastic pieces of history in their own special way.

I could bearly control my excitement in also finding a proof of the original 1996 toonie. Cheapest proof I have ever bought as the postage was almost as much as the coin. But I am pleased with this simple little coin in its original mint presentation box. I am bullish on bears.

Nice toonie, mestephil, congrats! My U.S. proof type set includes all the modern issues, and I really enjoy getting beautiful examples of those at a very minimal cost.

I totally agree on the approach. The only complaint I have about the US proof sets is the cases, in that you can't store each coin individually very easily, if you want. Now I like the approach of the Limited Silver sets where each capsule can be taken out looked at on its own. I still have not figured out an optimal approach for myself yet.

But back at toonies - I really like them and most are relative cheap to get if you can find nice specimens.

A lovely quartet!

Thank you. The '62s and '63s arrived today as well. So that will be it unless I decide to collect all of the mint marks.
