hokiefan_82 A really nice upgrade, and a big one too! That is no cheap coin, especially in MS65 and one with pleasing toning such as yours has.

Thanks very much, westcoin! And you're correct, this is now my most expensive silver classic commemorative in my complete set. However, after seeing it in hand I have zero regrets with the purchase, and I got it at auction for about 10% over Greysheet bid so I think I did very well on the price.

My goal in my commemorative upgrading project is to have all the coins in my set at a minimum grade of NGC/PCGS MS65. I'm getting there, as I only have 10 commemoratives remaining (plus the thin Norse-American Medal) in grades lower than 65. Two of those, however, will be tougher than the Grant Star - the Hawaiian half and the Lafayette dollar. Since I've already sort of busted my 2023 budget, neither of those upgrades will likely be done this year, but I do hope to get those in 2024. We'll see...

The only complaint I have about the US proof sets is the cases, in that you can't store each coin individually very easily, if you want.

@mestephil, while I do buy the proof sets from the mint, my actual type set is all PCGS/NGC certified. Certified examples of many modern proof types can be found in PR69 (and sometimes PR70) for well under $30. I've got several for which I paid less than $10. Or, if you prefer raw, you can alway crack them out of the mint-issued cases. That's something I used to do regularly before I started my certified type set.

That's a good suggestion as it also allows me to focus better on what I am looking for. As for cracking the mint cases, I have thought of it but have not built up the nerve yet, but a good suggestion. Maybe practice on a duplicate proof set of lower value? Thanks!

For Mint and silver mint sets, I buy 2 of each. I keep one set intact, and the other I crack out for display in my albums.

This one came yesterday, my first slave token. A Middlesex DH-1037 halfpenny slightly porous and worn, by William Lutwyche.

Obv: "Am I not a Man and a Brother" Slave kneeling in chains.
Rev: "May Slavery & Oppression Cease throughout the World" Hands clasped in friendship and unity.

Powerful words and meaning.
