My latest: 1925 S Commemorative for the California Diamond Jubilee. Always wanted one of these as I grew up spending my summers in the heart of the Mother Lode - my great-great grandfather came for the gold rush.  |

Eventually he made a comfortable living being a hog drover and buying property throughout the Central Valley. I still have some mineral rights down in the southern end of the valley - more of a pain than a benefit. My paternal great-grandfather bought a hilltop above Columbia in the 1930s and re-opened the Shanghai pocket gold mine for a brief period. The family owned the cabin up there, called Yankee Hill until the 1970s. That's where I spent my summers growing up. Loved that place. He made his fortune (and lost it) in the early century in Kern County as an oil speculator/capitalist (think "There Will Be Blood" kind of character). He was responsible for a small oil rush around Los Gatos in 1910. I've got a lot of California history in my blood. |
