For quite some time I have felt as though our coinage is too "commemorative" looking, former Presidential portraits I personally feel misrepresent us as a country. And I mean no disrespect to any of them. So my question to the forum is as follows. What are your opinions on striking any number of the hundreds of patterns from the 1800's to replace each denomination? There were some beauties! If not something old, how about something from one of the modern mint sculptors? For instance, the reverse of the upcoming 2019 American Legion $5 gold commemorative is absolutely gorgeous. The way the eagle flows with the roundness of the coin, stunning. Coins such as these would not only redefine us as a country of many, but create a rebirth of coin collecting which we have not seen in a few decades.

I agree, that some of the designs are boring looking. I would like to see better designs myself.

I think that a completely new series for each denomination would be fantastic. The half dollar has had the Kennedy design since 64. The quarter has had Washington since 32. The dime has had Roosevelt since 46. The nickel has had Jefferson since 38. Last but not least, the cent has had Lincoln since 09!

I would like to see Lady Liberty on some circulating coinage again. (and high relief...)

*edited - I forgot to mention the nickel for some reason..*

I totaly agree. I think that our coins look boring and I would love to see the design of the 1908 2 1/2 dollor coin come back. I also think that we should have 5 dollar coins back. 10 dollar 20 dollar etc. They could even be made out of silver or gold.

No more real people on circulating coinage, ever. Bring back allegorical designs. We could use old patterns for inspiration but modern production techniques and design sensibilities would allow for improvements. There are a number of beautiful design candidates among the platinum bullion and gold "American Liberty" releases of recent years, especially the eagles on the reverse. They might need to be scaled back and down for circulation pieces but we wouldn't have to look too far.

Agreed, nothing should be recycled. Let the classic liberty designs remain classic.

Exactly. While I think we should have better designs I am completely against reusing old ones as it not only cheapens the originals, but also there are certainly people somewhere on the planet that can make a new spectacular design

As much as we all love the classic designs, they're a thing of the past.
Rest in Peace

Forget it , the director of the bureau of engraving and printing doesn't care about coin collectors .
I'm sure most of us would like a change to see something that resembles classic coinage .

Change might be good, but the changes that have been made on reverses have been poor. So I don't trust them to make good changes. It seems like they'll want yearly obverse changes.

True, and I would bet the director of the mint doesn't care that much about paper money or stamp collectors.

Now picture the Mint making our coins with Lassie or Roy Rogers on them. Or Marilyn Monroe, Jay Leno or any other famous people for our coinage. Better yet why not use our coins as an advertising agent. Picture our Nickel with Klenex or a Chevy on them. If used for advertising, our Mint could actually charge companies to make coins.
