Can anybody tell me what's going on with this "D" MM? I didn't see an RPM like it on Wexlers.

that's rpm 2 I think on VV, possibly stage D. http://www.varietyvista.com/02a%20L...4DRPM002.htm
But looks like it's MD at the same time

Not finding any die markers on either side - may just be too worn?

Does not look like a RPM to me. Some type of MD.

I'm thinking that it's high bounce Machine Doubling.

The same phenomenon is happening to the top of the date. What is seen above the mintmark is not from repunching of the D. A similar thing happens to the D of the 1927-D ddo-002 cent. Wexler listed it as a rpm but a number of these coins have been compared and the attributor for Coppercoins deemed it not to be a rpm. Here is one of mine.

Mark1959, I have a 1984 D that the mintmark looks identical to what you have and I believe it is MD and I'm thinking yours is too. I hope I'm wrong on both counts. Interesting cent.

Looks more like push doubling to me. Note the metal striation lines on the pushed area from die movement.

So the RPM was a bit altered on Stoneman's coin.

The Marks coin is not a RPM. Just strong Machine push doubling.
