I know this is not a great picture but it should suffice for my question. I bought this for $4.00 in the coin store simply because I had four singles to burn in my wallet, love shiny coins and I for some reason don't own the 76s proof.

Anyway despite the lousy picture the coin is flawless except for the darker smudge right behind Washington's head. The owner of the coin store seemed relieved I took it off his hands.

Does this imperfection actually devalue this coin to it's melt value? Even if it did I still would have paid the four bucks.

$8.40 in PR-63 silver. Are you sure the flaw isn't on the holder? Open it up and take a look, carefully.

If it's actually on the coin, leave well enough alone.

I can't seem to pry the holder apart with my fingers and don't wish to try with any tools.

The smudge looks worse in the picture than in actuality. It's hard to tell if it's on the inside of the holder or on the coin. Maybe it's even just a piece of dust or debris that settled on the coin before it was sealed. Hard to tell but I think I will in fact just leave it alone and display it in my case.

I was simply curious to how much it actually devalues the coin but I guess that's hard to tell without opening it and finding out.

These holders are tougher than what they use today. I opened with with a utility knife. Run it along the edge to weaken the seal. It takes some patience.
