If so, what? I went to my campus bank today and picked up $17.50 worth of halves including 2 40%ers. But that's all they have and most likely all they will ever have, so if I want to get my CRHing fix I'll have to switch to other denominations. But is it even worth the time? What's the second-best CRH denomination, if any?

If you are searching for silver, halves are the way to go. 1st reason is that since they are not commonly circulated, the silver is less likely to have been picked. (Only hunters will be finding it) 2nd reason is it seems more likely that a halves collection will be dumped than a dime or quarter collection. (Primary for the same reason as above.) Lastly and probably most importantly, supposing that find rates would be the same on a per 1000 coin basis, you would get more $ for the same effort.

Sounds like you're just a stacker. Then you're... Ahh, ..., .. , stuck. Pulling silver is a lost cause it seems, too many lookers, and it's slim pickings for circulated to be left... only shows up when collections are dumped. You have to search BOXES AND BAGS to pull a let of silver, got $1000, how about $3000 for three boxes, then comes the problem, where do you dump them, most banks won't take them, even rolled, has to be "teller counted". You are....screwed there.
Alternative is to change what and how you "collect". Do you check for errors, varieties and doubled dies, even RPMs? Then most any denomination may hold value. Join the club of learning what's good and what's ain't so good. To "make a boatload 'o cash", you probably won't, but you will get your OCD/ADHD/PTSD fix filled, I gare-own-tee!

Pennies and Nickels are your best bet . These days you have to be very lucky to find 90% silver in Dimes, Quarters, Halves .

@crazy Funny typo in your first sentence. Edit:Aww too bad you fixed it lol. End edit I am fortunate enough to have a bank with a counting machine in the lobby. I can pick up two boxes at One Bank and immediately dump them at another bank, obviously minus any good ones that I find. Silver is slim pickings but when you hit it, usually get more than one.

Thanks for the suggestions. A few years ago I found $56 face worth of 40% and 90% Kennedys in $120 worth of customer wrapped rolls, so the silver is absolutely still out there. About half were uncirculated; I made a killing on that one. There's always been scattered 40s in other rolls as well, such as today's, and I've also found a couple '82 No FGs. Of the other options, cents seem to have the most high-value possibilities, so I might pick them up; obviously everyone would love to find a '72 doubled die or a '99 Wide AM. Other denominations seem to top out in the lower figures, so cents feel like the second choice. Do any dedicated cent hunters here have relative estimates of how often such finds turn up, as well as smaller ones like 1984/1995 DDO, 1983 DDR, and 1998/2000 WAM?

I've found several thousand silver coins in the last ten years, gave it up in 2014. Dimes were my favorite because of variety. Silver Canadians, Barbers, mercs, proofs and of course, Rosies. One silver dime per $140, per volume. Halves were ok, but a bit boring. The key to successful roll hunting is searching volume.

Not that there's many major doubled dies out there anymore, but I'd imagine there'd be way more WAMs still available. No 99s I assume? Why search a million cents with these pull rates? Halves seem like by far the best option, for sure. Just a matter of finding them.

My problem is dumping the halves...they have no boxes unless you order them... wanna give me the $1,000? They gave me,(now get this, still trying to figger this one) 12 rolls, customer wrapped. Of course these were searched, and marked with two different colors of marketing different marks. But 2 hours later, same teller would take them back wrapped up, said they had to be counted to be accepted. So out of wrappers they came, and didn't get put back in... But then, why did I get rolls? Teller also said they wouldn't take in a box, they don't give out that much. So halves are out, any more just do nickels when urge strikes, too many stinking Zinkins now..

Hmm, never run into problems with banks taking my discarded halves. They always just take them right back like it's nothing. Then again, I've never shown up with $1k worth of halves either. $200 was the biggest batch I ever found, I think. I believe it was a skunk as well.
What's to be found in nickels? I don't know of any major modern varieties in particular, and silver obviously isn't their calling card.

@Crazyb0 - don't limit yourself to just one stuffy bank. Setup accounts with several that will cater to your needs. In my heyday I had at minimum six different accounts around town. I could even walk into a strange bank and have them order boxes without an account...not to mention miles and mile of road-tripping, cold calling tellers. That is, if you are serious about the hobby.

I have found 1 1984 doubled ear DDO, 1 1995 DDO, 3 1998 Wide AM's (ended up giving away one in a free giveaway, so I have only two now), and 5 2000 Wide AM's. The only thing I haven't found yet, is the 1983 DDR. I would recommend searching Lincoln Cents, because I've had so much good luck with them.
Errers and Varietys.
