If you use a TPG that gives a "detail" grade on a "cleaned" coin, you have probably received at least one yourself. Since the cleaning is usually detected by the physical marks or by differential amounts of crud in the date and small openings of letters or around stars. If the coin was circulated such as EF40, and the faint cleaning lines were the problem, why couldn't a person break it out and carry it around in an otherwise empty pocket for a while? I assume the random movement in a pocket ( I never carry coins in my Levi's (tm) coin pocket as it is easier to get them out of a front pocket) would eventually wear down to the depth of the cleaning lines, which look extremely shallow, compared to the height difference between an EF40 and a VF35. Any comments?
Just another odd thought gazing at a "cleaned" coin I can barely see the cleaning lines under high magnification.

Maybe a VF coin with seemingly original surface may be worth less than a lightly cleaned EF detail coin ?

I was thinking the same thing; I am not sure it be worth damaging the coin and further lowering the grade in order to get rid of the cleaned qualifier. Cleaning damages the coin and purposely damaging the coin further is like putting salt on an open wound.

Hi

I don't think there would be that much wear difference for most coins, at least for the faint cleaning lines I see. Yes if it was harshly cleaned, it might go from a ef to a vf, but would seem like it would take a lot of rubbing. I guess I will have to experiment, as I do not know how long it takes a coin to wear from EF to VF.

I know a few people that have taken some AU key date Morgans that were lightly cleaned and used them as a pocket piece for awhile to remove the cleaning lines but I don't know if anyone has ever sent the coin back in to be graded afterwards. My 1883-S Morgan was dipped at one time and I used it as my pocket piece and now you would never be able to tell if I didn't let you know, it was probably a AU-58 when started and now its about a AU-50

Tumble dry? Seems like I wash and tumble dry coins, nails, my Swiss Army knife, etc., all the time. Since I have a squeaky dryer, I never stay in the basement longer than I have to when the dryer is running, so I seldom catch them beforehand, lol.

I've heard that some people do that and consider them as their pocket piece. Personally, that seems wrongs just to downgrade a coin so you can get it into plastic.

I once saw a 1977 Kennedy half that was graded FR02 by PCGS. What's the point? Lowest grade registry? The coin is worthless dollar wise.

I just want to ad one thing, many times what gives out the cleaning is marking on naturally protected points, like valleys in the designs, raise parts of it etc. so in some cases you will need to downgrade it so much, so it wont be worth it value wise (like AU to VF)

This was probably another knock off slab that the chinese made thinking the coin was rare.

Exactly- some people with way too much money to spend on grading fees do low grade registry sets. I have never understood the appeal of that and I think it is completely ridiculous
