I just came across a 1983 P Half that had a strange looking reeded edge. Looking closer, it looks like a possible greased die error since there seems to be some hair at the back of the hairline and the lower main leg of the "R" in LIBERTY missing? FG is pretty hosed as well and other features are not very crisp. Reeded edge indicates very little circulation. What category would this be listed as?

Maybe too much striking pressure?

I'm leaning towards an over polished die issue.

@Errers and Varietys:

So is that why all the features are worn even though the reed indicates not much handling?

Yes, that's correct. That issue caused the leg of the "R" in "LIBERTY" to be partially missing. Theypolish the dies down, in order to get rid of Die Clashes that happened. It also helps extend the life of the die a little bit longer, so they can get more strikes out of it. http://www.error-ref.com/thinning-a...gn-elements/

So what does that make this coin's worth at, just a worn die strike and worthless or a collectible or? Should I get it graded or just tuck it away in a case ore capsule somewhere?

It doesn't carry a premium, and it's not worth getting it graded, but if you want to keep it still, I would recommend putting it in a 2x2 coin flip.

It is more of a collectable because of the BU look to the coin. 1982 & 1983 halves are worth a premium for being BU. They didn't sell mint sets those years. So collectors are looking to fill their collections with nice coins. So it is a collectable for that reason.

Thanks all for your input, I'm keeping this instead of depositing it. I've learned about bounced die strikes and now (overly) polished dies, and BU 82 & 83's. I wish I knew this a few years ago. Always something new to learn... Thanks again.
