To CCF! I don't think that this is a legitimate error coin. If it was actually a blank planchet, it wouldn't have the formed reeded edges on it. This coin was most likely sanded down with a sander.

@Lyndzharden, first welcome to CCF. Second, could you please supply the weight of this piece? That might help us with a determination of whether it is a sanded down quarter or something else.

Ok well then, it can't be a quarter planchet or a sanded-down quarter because they weigh about 5.670 g when new. It could be a non-US coin worn down to a slick or else a slug that someone added that reeded rim to just for fun.

I'm sorry, but it's not a legitimate error coin. It has been altered outside of the U.S. Mint. Here's a legitimate example. Yours is not like this, because it was altered. https://www.ebay.com/itm/BLANK-Type...253892282754

This one could be a bit of a mystery so if we can figure out what its not, maybe it will help figure out what it is.

It is not a ground down coin, that's obvious, so it was not a coin to start with.
It is not a planchet because it has a reeded edge.

Is it possible it is some sort of a blank with reeding made for a special purpose such as engraving. Note the edge only extends over one side.

Rest in Peace

It could be a variety of things, one it is not is a coin blank(planchet). One-sided as JimmyD pointed out points to a token or medal(lion) of some sort. these had many uses, that size of a quarter may well have been a gaming token of some sort, not all were labeled(usually something?). Or it could be an un-stamped/etched medallion, with the edged portion for a paper insert(picture, advertising). It is mos likely a privately issued item.

It has not been sanded down.

It is not a blank planchet.

It is possibly a blank used for a token or engraving, as JimmyD mentioned. What it is not is a sanded down coin or a blank planchet.
