Heavy Die Deterioration and polishing would be my guess...

I am learning... thanks to all of you sharing your knowledge.

There is a lot to know about...and questions to ask, but it is sinking in. Can definitely get through coins much faster when you know what you are looking for.

He is wondering what's going on with the javelin that seems to be piercing Monticello's dome, not the Die Deterioration. As for me, I have no idea what that could be.

That is the top of the upper deck rail... the spokes ( whatever you call them) are polished out... so it appears to be floating... or in this case, with it happening on both sides, it appears to be piercing through ;)
