Back in 2001, ebay coins (in Canada) was almost totally populated with ordinary collectors (too many dealers now with many crazies asking up to 10x list price, get real !). A lot of coins with errors and varieties were not well known and you could find exotic stuff. The cameras didn't have a gazillion pixels (mine had 1.2mp) so the photos on ebay were mostly terrible or out of focus (why are some still so bad today ?). Most auctions showed only one side of the coin.

I guess because of having 3 grandparents born in Gr.Britain around 1900, and seeing b/w movies in the 50's of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn), knights and such, I have an interest in some British things, such as coins and cars (had an XKE once but ....). I just bought up some old British coins, mainly to have one of each of the different monarchs (ain't gonna happen - some too expensive for casual collecting, sorry), but ended up with a bunch of interesting ones. Bought this one in 2001 for $7 Canadian. (26 mm., 5.70 grams)

I'm certainly interested, but with a coin like that, I don't even want to speculate.

Very interesting - and it seems to have spent a lot of time in circulation!

1697 was the year of the Great Re-Coinage, when all surviving hammered silver coins were withdrawn and replaced by new milled ones. I imagine the mints were working at full capacity and that the quality control was not as good as usual...

Doesn't make sense to me. I can go with the reverse brockage if that was all it was as these do occur albeit very rare in their own right. My concern being how on earth can the brockage side be double struck on all letters where the obverse is only partially double struck noticeably on the BR? If the brockage side was double struck then surely the already doubled BR would appear as BRBRBRBR?
