Greetings I'm new here. just searching around trying to find some help identifying this Buffalo nickel I found the other day. I was given it for change at a gas station. the date seems rubed off and theres no mint mark on the back of it... Image:  100_1870.jpg82.02 KB |

WELCOME to the forum. The design on the Buffalo nickel had the date positioned on it in a way that it wore off quickly. There are alot of Buffalo nickels like this. I typically see prices for no date Buffalo nickels ranging from 8 to 15 cents each. That's why you can occasionally get them in change. As far as identifying it, the Buffalo nickel you have was made from 1913 - 1938. Is there anything more you were looking for? |

Enjoy the find! Basically a dateless Buffalo nickel, there are scads of them. there are products available to restore missing dates, ie Nic-a-Date, if you have to know the date. Otherwise be thankful the cashier was not a collector and be content that you got one from circulation.  Not that common of a occurrence these days! |

Keep in mind no coin is worthless to a coin collector. This is the kind of coin that is great to pass to a child, include with a tip, or other ways of passing it along. Like coinaholic said, it's not common to get them in change anymore. When I get them they come out of rolls I get from the bank to search. So congrats on the find.

May I ask how it is done? Yes there is, as I mentioned, a product called Nic-A-Date which I believe is a mild acid that will etch out the metal and reveal the date on some dateless Buffalo nickels.
