Just bought my first barber half. I spent $25 on it. Probably not a spectacular buy but not a bad one either.

It's not pretty but... it is a semi-key

I've been thinking about starting a Barber half set for a while. I had such a blast putting together my Barber dime set that I looked at the other Barber coinage. No way I could ever think about putting a complete quarter set together as I couldn't ever afford the 01S. But the halves look like they should be fairly easy to pick up in AG-F shape for not a whole lot of money.

I'm going to start being on the lookout for the keys in AG. Hopefully I'll be able to pick them up for around a third of RedBook.

I used to live in OKC. There was a dealer there who had a complete type set (7070) put together. His goal was to have the absolute ugliest type set. He was always on the lookout for coins to DOWNGRADE his collection. He only had one main rule... No damaged coins, just ones with honest to goodness wear. The date and mintmarks had to be evident also.

In it's own way it was a really neat collection. I was more surprised at some of the modern coins he had than the classics. I can't begin to imagine how tough it was for hime to find a clad Kennedy in P-01.

Yes I thought about the same - no damaged ones, scratched on purpose etc. However, how to find lets say.. a Sacagawea in AG? Even finding a Roosevelt clad dime would be hard

His 7070 was an older album... didn't have a spot for sacs... or State Quarters... The one he was struggling with was a SBA.

Oh yeah that one too By the way, how long have SBAs been in general circulation? Is it ever found today or was it withdrawn?
Rest in Peace

Yea people hate them bc they are so close to the quarter. They should be withdrawn because they were a bad design with the size and color so close to the quarter. The "gold" dollars are atleast easy to spot the difference.

Springcypress, where did you acquire that Barber Half? I've been thinking about starting up a Barber set myself. Plus, I think you pretty much live right down the road from me and there aren't any shops (at least that I know of) in the northwest side of Houston!

I haven't gone to that one yet. There's one in Traders Village that I checked out a few weeks back but they seemed to be a bit on the high side.

yep... I thought the same thing about the one in traders village... Prices were way off, it was like they took the Red Book overgraded everything by one step and priced everything in their store off of that.

The store on rice is "different"... I think it's called Collectors Coin Shop. the owner is an old vietnam vet who's more concerned about playing his guitar, preparing for the open mic night, and smoking out than he is about turning a profit.

He's a riot to talk to. If you're not scared of dropping a few f bombs here and there he'll love ya.

That's awesome! I'll have to check this place out. From our area of town it's only about a 30 minute drive on the weekend. If I went there now it might be a different story...I probably wouldn't arrive until sometime tonight, with the traffic and all.

it's open 7 days a week... the owner is the guy with the short beard... his buddy with the crazy long beard helps him out alot... both are vets.

Sometimes when he's in a serious jam session it's hard to get his attention to open the door...

DON'T STEAL ALL THE BARBERS THOUGH!

Ha ha! Ok, I will leave the Barbers for you. Right now I am primarily into IHCs and Liberty V nickels, unless I can also find bargains in Morgans and Walkers.
