I don't think this belongs in grading sub section, because I am only going to comment on my preference when it comes to Morgans. Am I alone in this? I personally can't stand rubs on Miss Liberty's face. It obviously comes from mint sewn bags being tossed around but give me a clean face and I'm happier. For example, this graded MS64 on the left ... I'd walk right past it over the one on the right that is less than UNC. Even on a prooflike it turns me off. Maybe even moreso. Needless to say, I don't own coins like that, I find them unattractive. I know there are others can simply overlook this and good for you, but not for me.

I'm sure you aren't alone in this. I personally don't mind the dings and scratches on Liberty's face, but I'm sure others don't share that opinion.

The one on the left is the nicer coin with frost breaks, the one on the right is poor lighting designed to cover everything up

It's just an example to illustrate what I am trying to say.

Agree, absolutely no way to compare these pics. Sorry, not good examples.

How's this? Last try to get my point across. To me, I know the one on the right, an MS62 (not by date but just by type) will be worth more to some people and list higher in price in a guide book than the AU50 on the left, but to me, I find the one on the left actually more attractive when it comes to some Morgans. That's all I'm trying to say.

Well, you can get some really nice common date Morgans having a detailed strike with very few scratches on the face. They aren't terribly expensive, but the only thing (which I commented on last week in another thread) is that there are lots of 66 & 67 graded coins (from PCGS & NGC) lately that seem over-graded (IMO).

Sure, you can find deep mirror prooflike Morgans with no rub and no frost breaks...provided your wallet is sufficiently deep as well. There's nothing wrong with preferring coins that don't have bag marks, or that have brilliant luster instead of frosty luster. Collect what makes you happy. The fact that many Morgan dollars have such marks does not mean you have to settle for accepting coins that aren't pleasing to you. If you're not in it for the money, and don't care about PL/DMPL, a really choice AU58 Morgan can sometimes look much more pleasing to the eye than a beat-up MS62 or MS63. You may have to spend longer searching for just the right coin, but when you find it, you'll probably be much happier with it than those 62's, and your wallet will be much less lighter.

Jmwilson: I've got to agree with your observations on Morgans. I've always kind of felt that they were graded less strictly than some other coins (most?). So many gems! TNG: when your 1892 was a newborn babe, before it took its brief walk about in the circulating world, I would guess it had a higher grade than the 1884. Like you, I think the clean-looking '92 is more appealing than the higher graded '84.
