That appears to be some post minting damage, not a die gouge.

Ok, thanks SilverDollar. I thought it was interesting on the letter "O" ( on the word OF) I thought if it were post mint damage it wouldnt effect the "O" like that.

Post strike damage. It does appear to be from a coin machine or other. I've found many of these. Keep searching!

Incuse marks on coin is 99% of the time is from damage on a coin. There are errors caused by the striking process, but these are not the issue. Coin damage happens a lot to coins. After they are damaged intentionally, what do they do with them? Spend them.

Scratch
A die gouge would stick UP from the surface of the coin because the die is inverse. A scratch goes INTO the coin, although it may displace metal above the surface on one or more sides.

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge!! I did want to say to John1 ..hope your eyes stopped watering. No but seriously, I was a smidge aggravated by your comment. http://goccf.com/t/330987#2827532Just wanted to share my perspective, I'm newish..but 82 posts in..im eager to learn and I always research everything I can find online prior to asking any questions. I know all of you are asked the same sophomoric questions again and again, and thank you for that. But PICTURES..ERRRR... Its probably the most frustrating things for both us newbies and all of you experts, obviously you cant help us without a clear photo. I get... Need closer pics..need clearer pics..I bought a phone loop JUST FOR THESE CLOSEUPS that make your eyes water..LOL (sorry about that..it only took me 45 mins to get a pic I thought was close and clear enough ) Have I checked out the thread on taking pics? Ofcoarse..but I also see threads of newbies asking "whats the best way to get a close up pic of a coin"...and the answers are ..be more descriptive or specific. I just want to shout..WE JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW TO TAKE PICTURES TO YOUR SATISFACTION.. and what do we need to do that. I do appreciate everyone's help, just know I'm trying to get the best pics up that I can.

PMDIt stands for Post Mint Damage, and refers to any damage a coin has suffered after leaving the mint. Common examples of damaged coins (those with PMD) are any U.S. coins with: Scratches.
