Hi! I've recently inherited a small tin containing around 15 strang coins. One of them is particularly odd and has sparked my curiosity. Please keep in mind I know nothing about coin minting or errors. This is a 1941 d nickel with a star punched above Monticello. Could this be something the mint would have done or maybe a machinists test punch. I am aware this was done during a transitional period and there were changes during this time so I'm hoping it's something truly unique . Thanks for any assistance.

To the Forum.

counterstamp
A stamp or impression placed on a coin after it has left the Mint of origin. Counterstamps were frequently used as advertising gimmicks on large cents and other coins. The counterstamp leaves a permanent impression on the metal and may hurt the value of the coin. It may also help the value, as in the case of an Ephraim Brasher counterstamp.

It is recommended to upload full pictures of both sides.
And very important ,in the right position.

Just an interesting counter stamp that you'll likely never find the significance of.

It is a damaged coin. But it is a pretty cool counter stamped coin. I would keep it as a "coin of interest "

This is called a counterstamp. It's a form of Post Strike Damage ( PSD), meaning that this damage happened after it left the U.S. Mint. You can also post your Nickel on this thread for fun. http://goccf.com/t/126486&whichpage=50
