I was browsing ebay the other day and I found an item that I was suspicious about. Now, here's my question: If a seller does not offer refunds and he sells me a counterfeit coin, does ebay protect me from being taken advantage of? In other words, if the coin turns out to be fake and I present enough credible evidence, will ebay help me get my money back, even if the seller does not offer refunds? Sorry for the wordiness, but I hope it makes sense. Thanks!

If you received an item that's incomplete, damaged, counterfeit, or otherwise not as described, request a return from My ebay. We will track the resolution and help if you ask us to step in.

Edit to add: This hasn't happened to me (as far as I'm aware) so I can't comment further -- I'm sure others can. From what I've read here, though, you can probably expect some pushback from the seller, and you should do what you can to assert your case (i.e. that it is counterfeit). ebay tends to side with the buyer, though there are exceptions.

From my experience you should have no problem. But why buy an item that you suspect isn't what it says it is?

@Alpha2814 - Thank you for the link. I'll look through it to see if there's any info.

@999fine - The item in question is super rare with a large price tag, but even with my suspicion, I think it may be worth taking a gamble on.

Why not list the ebay ID number here and someone can probably help
determine if it is counterfeit or not.

In my experiences, small amounts are easily fixed by ebay or Paypal. But beware of larger amounts.

I once had fraudulent purchases made using my Paypal account tied to my bank checking account. Paypal quickly took care of all amounts less than $200. However, there were $2300 & $4400 purchases where they shipped $2300 item (watch) and $4400 were about to ship out. These fraudulent purchases were made Sunday morning between 6am to 9am. I only found out because I received a call from Nike asking me if I made three separate purchases in 10 minutes.

It took me 14 days, 6 calls to Paypal (about 45 min to hour each) and threat to call local news stations for them to reverse $2300. They initially said that since the item was shipped, even if to an address that I have no clue, they denied my claim of fraudulent purchase.

I was totally shocked by their response, where they always claim "All fraudulent purchases" are properly refunded and that we don't have to worry about it.

After this incident, all my Paypal transaction using different computers have to go through 2-step verification system. I also never tie my bank account to Paypal. Only small limit credit card. You all should do the same.
