a little more than a year ago I posted two pictures of 2 different 1953 $2 bills. They differed from each other in length of design and length of bill itself. Reaction on this forum was generally unaccepting, and I determined to investigate further. This year I looked at all my crisp 1953 bills, 58 of them. here are the results: 1953 - of 16 bills only one was longer. The shorter bills are 15.6 centimeters long, the long bill is 15.8 to the edge. The shorter design is 14.8 centimeters, while the longer one is 15.0 centimeters. Of 8 1953-A bills, only 2 are longer-15.8 centimeters, and both designs are 15.0 centimeters. Of 8 1953-B bills, none are longer. Of 26 1953-C bills, 2 are longer,15.8 with a design 15.0 long. Of 58 bills, 5 are longer. All shorter bills are 15.5 centimeters long, with designs 14.8 centimeters long. All longer bills are 15.7+, with designs uniformly 15.0 centimeters. The difference in length and design is uniformly .2 centimeters. The results are easy to see. I just don't know why. Interestingly,1976 bills were all longer, as were 1995 and 2013 bills. In the pictures the longer bill is No. 75.

I believe the results and your measurements.

I'm pretty sure the LT's were wet-intaglio printed and the small variable in dimensions are within BEP specs. The later FRN's are dry-intaglio printed and variations in measurements are easier to control which makes for a more uniform note.

Just my Two Cents.

Thanks to both of you. I have it in my mind that perhaps it was a cutting error, since I know consecutive numbers aren't really consecutive. Oh, well, still interesting. Also I found there's literally no way to contact any knowledgeable person at the BEP. Thanks again, Bill.

I agree that this is usually due to the wet printing process that was previously used by the BEP.

Out of curiosity, what are the front and back plate numbers on the notes?
