Picked this up for $15.50. The coin is dark and the reverse shows what looks like clashing, but can't really match it with obverse design. Thoughts on grade and problems? Thanks!

Some carbon spots, I'm thinking this maybe a smoked or AT coin to hide a bad cleaning. Give it a good sniff test when you get the coin in hand, you don't want to be smelling chemicals or tobacco odors.

I'm not seeing any clashing, what I do see looks like scratches from a pin or knife, possibly just reflections due to what I think is a very shiny surface. Interested in seeing this one again with better photos.

This could be a good study coin, on how to hide problems, on coins, sold on ebay, through creative lack of lighting.

EDIT: my apologies to "numismatic student" if he/she took the photos, I'm not trying to belittle anyone's lack of photo skills.

This coin came in and it was really beautiful, detailed and lustrous. When I looked at it under a loupe at 5x and 10x, there were a large number of scratches. The second set of pictures is adjusted a little to highlight the scratches.

As I suspected scratched or graffiti issues. How does it smell? (seriously) Cigar smoke was an old timer trick to discolor the coin and hide the scratches.

It didn't smell as far as I could tell. The scratches were really fine and I couldn't see them without the loupe. They we surprisingly extensive. Seller didn't argue at all and accepted the return. He really took a bath with the refund and paying freight both ways on such an inexpensive coin.
