I have found a handful of Buffalo nickels recently, but I have a couple dateless that are in rough shape that I would like to try to bring out the date on. I don't want to use Nic-a-date on them as I don't like the finished look. I have never used vinegar to try and bring out the date before, but am leaning towards that.

Any advice from the nickel veterans on the best method? Vinegar? And how much does it affect the final coin? These two are rough and I'm willing to experiment. Thanks all

Go for it. That will give you a first hand idea of what vinegar will do to a coin. These two are smoked anyway so no reason not to experiment on them.

We have had a few threads on this process.

Depending on how much wear is on the coin, it may take days for the date to come out, and be warned that it may be faint. You will see the vinegar taking on a bluish colour as some copper is dissolved. Some are too worn for the date to come out.

Agreed. For the love of coins and science.
Rest in Peace

You need to combine peroxide along with the vinegar for best results, but less of the peroxide than the vinegar . Soak Nickel for 12-24 hours .

I would not use nic-a-date.

I use the white vinegar treatment, but it can take days or longer to get the result.

Update:
I soaked the two nickels in white vinegar and a bit of peroxide for 24 hours.

I can make out the dates now, a 1927 and a 1917. The vinegar cleaned up the rough nickels a bit more, which I'm happy with. Cool test and process. Thanks for the input all!
