An 1882 on the left, and an 1889 on the right. Even though the 1882 is just a tad more worn down, I think both have a shot at Poor-1. What do you think?

looks like the 1882 is between po1 and fr2. 1889 looks fr2.

i always wonder how many of these get there with the help of a buffing wheel.

I think it'd probably be a tougher task to mechanically simulate wear from circulation, at least through sanding or buffing, than it might seem on the face of it. I can conceive of other methods that might give some sort of believable abrasion pattern, but I'm not sure the subsequent appearance of the surfaces wouldn't still betray the ruse.

As to these two specific coins, I'd remark that it's human nature that to suppose that if one's discernibly superior to the other, albeit very sightly so, to suppose that that would translate into a differential in the assigned grade, when in fact both might in fact meet a certain threshold or criterion. Perhaps I'd have been better served to have posted them separately. It'd certainly be an interesting experiment to submit them for certification one at a time.
