I think I'm getting the hang of these Roman coins. Surely this one's a Maximinus II Follis. 26mm diameter.

Once you get the hang of reading the legends, go to google and type in the emperors name and the word 'Wildwinds'. That website has pages for each emperor with many of their issues listed + pictures. If you can't read a reverse legend, try going to the wildwinds page and type something like 'standing left' or 'star in ex' and take a look at the pictures until you find your type. You'll quickly get the hang of reading the legends and recognising the emperors. Wildwinds is my first port of call when trying to ID a coin.

Max seems to have been a very popular name in the 3rd century
Maximianus
Galerius Maximianus
Maxentius
Maximinus
And even Constantine styled himself as MAX AVG for a time

Your coin is in fairly good condition but might be improved by a long bath in distilled water
Change the water every few days and scrub with a nylon brush
Rinse and repeat

Trying to figure out Galerius vs. Maximinus II still gives me nightmares, especially since their obverse legends sometimes overlap!

Maximian, fortunately, is easy to ID on account of his little button nose - just about all the other emperors of the tetrarchy used interchangeable "cookie cutter" portraits!

I have long wondered why Maximian is not typically included in the "Constantinian" dynasty; as the father of both Theodora and Fausta, he was the father in law to both Constantius I and Constantine I (yuck). This made him the grandfather of Constantine II, Constantius II, Constans, Delmatius, and Hanniballianus; Grandfather in law to Licinius I, and great-grandfather to Gallus, Julian, and Nepotian.
