In looking back over the whole of last year, I was quite taken back by the number of coins I have purchased and the monies spent in acquiring them.... Made a fair few excellnt buys, a few so sos and a couple of lemons. The one that sticks out as my "Buy of the Year" is viewable by clicking on the link provided. My selection was not just based on the acquisition of what might be a fairly rare coin but also in the following: 1. Overcoming the restrictions placed by the seller based in the US. 2. The unqualified assistance received from a member here who did not know me from a bar of soap. 3. The dramas that followed in the payment of this purchase. 4. Wondering what fabulous journey this coin had gone through from the UK then to the US before finding a permanent home downunder. 5. Lastly, it can be said that it was through this one particular auction that a "love" blossomed for this Forum. My Buy of the Year Once again, it would be nice to wind up my collecting year for 2005 and look forwarded to equal great buys for 2006 by saying....many thanks Richard, all of these would not hve been possible without your assistance. If you can be graded in numismatic terms...you are a true GEM ...

That is one amazing lady you have there lim.... I think that some common bullion coins were my top buy. Their former owner though, was anything but common.

My top buy, also involved the help of a new member to this forum, as without him and his friends I would never have been awakened to the beauty of Australian coins. Guess I never really gave them a good hard look! Thanks lim118 for putting me onto the Australian 1992 Masterpieces in Silver as they will remain in this household for years and years to come! My second pick would have to be the Liberia 2005 Titanic Expedition Commemorative with an actual piece of Titanic coal, recovered during the expedition in 2000, that is actually embedded in the coin. I have so many favorite coins but those would top my buys in 2005! World coin collecting has brought me collecting friends from nations around the globe and has opened my eyes to that which I had not seen before and quite honestly I owe my world collection to this computer sitting before me as without it none of it would have really been possible. Guess some technology is actually good for us all!!!

As 2005 was a year to remember for all, it will be a year NEVER forgotten by millions of people in the United States. I would like to dedicate my coins of the year to each and everyone of those affected by Hurricane Katrina. You see, my choice is not one of vast fame, fortune, or desire, but of history, lost lives, and recovery. This coin has more symbolic meaning to me, personally, than to the millions that have used it as a way of entertainment, escape, and gambling. I offer to the community and the world a coin that has been through slot machines, casino bank vaults, and the worst natural disaster the United States has ever seen. Image: obv.jpg24.67 KB Image: rev.jpg23.47 KB I found this coin while helping with some of the clean up and still living in Gulfport, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina destroyed everything that I grew up to know. It was buried under a pile of rubble and covered in more than an inch of mud, but I took it home, let it soak in a bath of warm, soapy water, and let it dry between some paper towels with the other coins I found. It is a $5 gaming token from the Beau Rivage Casino and Resort in Biloxi, MS. Though it is obvious it has been through the hurricane, to me, it would grade PROOF 10000! Proof that not matter what you may think, your life can REALLY change in the blink of an eye. This January 28th will make 5 months since the hurricane changed everything I knew, every place I hung out at growing up, and changed my entire perspective on life. As a tid-bit of advice to those that have not learned life's true lesson: Cherish everything that is around you for as long as you possibly can! Love everyone dear and near to you! And just because a coin may have over an inch of mud on it, take care of it; it will always give you something to reflect and learn about. That is my coin of 2005. Thank you and God Bless everyone! (Like US coin/currency says, "IN GOD WE TRUST"!)

My top buy was a coin shop!!!!
As far as a coin goes it was a 1911 uncirculated Aussie penny. Nice coin, 75% lustre. The king jumps out at you. Aussie predecimal collectors would appreciate it.
BTW...Becky... I like the swiss coins. I picked up a few of these early this year. Sold most of them but still have 4 or 5 sitting in my safe for a lucky buyer. I would love to keep them but I have to draw a line in the sand.

Tough acts to follow; I can't compete with Eliasberg and the other very unusual coins. My best buy for 2005 was a raw 1892-CC Morgan which PCGS graded at MS-63, in line with its tougher standards on Morgans. Two years ago, it would have easily made MS-64, but I'm not gonna play the crack-out game and resubmit it.

My top buy was pretty much my whole collection. Peace dollar Set (AU-MS) Ike Set w/ Proofs. Silver Eagle Set Franklin half Set Kenndy Half Set Washington quarter Set Merc Dime Set (still needing a 16-d... anyone got one for sale in the ag/g range?) Key Lincoln Dates (S, S VDB, 14d) It may not be much to some of you, but for just starting out, I think I did pretty good in about a two-month span.

Hey JD, there's a local gentleman in town here that has a BEAUTY of a 16D!!! (Not sure what he's asking...but he's a real good ol' country boy that runs a pharmacy and dabbles on the side.) Next time my wife and I go in, I'll ask for you. He also has a 1877 Indian Head cent (HIGH AU!!!), and several other REAL BEAUTIFUL rarities!!! Read this post and you'll see what I mean! https://goccf.com/t/3256Go about half-way down the page and you'll see the posting.

My top buy has nothing to do with expense...just pleasure of discovering Australian coinage. I started, and brought up to date my silver Lunar Coin set. Beautiful coins. Also, a great pleasurable experience for 2005 was completing my Franklin half dollar collection.

My favorite for 2005 was a 1963 proof Franklin half. I bought it for $10 and sent it to ANACS where it graded PF-68 Cameo. Charlie
