About fifteen years ago I found the first token. It is almost exactly the same size as a US quarter. one side shows what appears to be a heron, with a small pine tree on either side, and the half outline of either the sun or the moon. The opposite side shows an owl perched on a tree limb , within a circle. The designs on both sides are raised. The owl side has a somewhat scalloped edge.
The second token was found across the country about five years ago. It is about the same size as a US nickel. All the above descriptions are the same for this token, except that more care was given to the effigies. Does anyone know anything about them? they are non ferris, and the metal is probably plated.

I'm intrigued that the designs are the not exact copies. Makes me wonder if they are symbols for some group? Masons or something similar? Produced to some specification but not from the same manufacturer?

I also have this, somewhere, and have been told on another forum that it was for U S military use in either an officer's club or mess. The story then diverges as claims were made for both Korea and Vietnam. I'm sifting through the other forum trying to find the original thread.

Nice tokens. Looks like Sjlund solved the mystery. It is from both Korea and Vietnam military usage.

I posted one a while ago in my bulk buy thread, The slight differences are from different companies that manufacture them , I couldn't find out which one was used at which club in which war but there most likely some overlap in usage in both conflicts.

I would think that the one with less detail on the die was the one minted for Nam, as the cost go up the detail has been getting light as it were.

Very interesting thread and thanks to @yontan for posting. I wonder if any of our servicemen could comment on the significance of these two particular birds?

It's good to know that my initial info is correct. Now all I have to do is locate my token and update it. Does anyone have an idea of current value?

Means nothing to me from my time in. A wild guess would be: early bird and night owl. So possibly symbolizes the fact the club/mess was open early to late to accommodate any schedule. 100% speculation there on my part.

Since the crane is a daylight bird and owl a night bird I would have to agree with you

Sorry for the long wait. What a great response! I just joined the Token Catalog site three days ago. Just looking for an almost unidentifiable token can be hard, and you guys came up with the answer. Thank you so much. Bill.
