Another ugly penny and I know people can damage them but I don't see how this could happen outside the pressing. Please let me know. Thank you.

Just a well damaged coin.
You can see where the copper has been displaced
No way it could happen during the striking of the coin so it is PMD

Ok I am on a learning curve that I keep crashing on. Why does displaced copper mean PMD please. I'm trying to know what to look for in other coins. Thank you.

The teeth marks look like they may have been made with a hole saw that slipped and jumped.

Okay, so you have essentially identical damage on both sides, but consider how the sides line up with one another: the incuse arc line at the top and teeth-like marks in an arc below. From side to side the line and teeth marks correspond. From that, I believe this coin was damaged mechanically, not intentionally, and in a machine that spins the coin.

Displaced metal can indicate Mint errors, but not often. Learning to recognize true errors is quite a long process, but starting here may help:

I forgot to thank you last night for that information. I spent a few hours reading and barely scratched the surface. I am starting on the pennies to learn and the trying the Mercury dimes. My Grandparents left them to my Dad and I got them several years ago and need to do something with them. Thank you for pointing me to that site.

Cutting edge on one side with teeth marks on the other. Possible damaged by a can opener? Thanks, Doug.
