This is my final question about Indian princely states. I might just give up collecting these...

I am told that this is a Tegh Shahi Paisa from Datia circa 1840. 8.5g and 15mm wide. However, the markings (some kind of fish) is not typical of Datia. Can anyone please help?

I didn't post this last night after looking into it, but I thought it probably was too. It is just a bit too crude for me to be certain. Datia has a number of mint marks that could resemble the one on your coin- especially if worn down or crudely struck. However, a few others could also be possible. I don't see anything though that makes me think it really is something else.

Now you understand why these fascinating coins can be purchased unattributed for $1 or $2. Don't give up!

Perhaps this excellent reference will help: https://archive.org/details/in.erne...7296/page/n5
