Hi everyone
I have about 20 old US coins that I deem important or in good enough nick to have graded, and others that I have my doubts bout. To courier coins to the NGC in the States from Africa (where I live) is expensive and risky, but NGC graded coins eliminate most of the guess work (especially for my kids and my estate when I'm gone). Furthermore, US coins have so many variants that for us non-US collectors/buyers/sellers it's virtually impossible to know them all.

The NGC grading, courier and insurance costs add up to about $50 per coin, so it must really be worth my while to send any of my coins for grading.

I would appreciate your general thoughts on the value of grading US coins, and I'll be posting some examples here soon.

If you post pictures of your coins for grading on ccf, we can give our thoughts on whether it makes sense to incur the expense. Look fwd to seeing your hoard.

I prefer PCGS if you plan on selling because they tend to bring a bit more than NGC. If you plan on keeping them in the family then maybe look into ANACS. Also, some TPG's are better on certain kinds/types of coins than others are.

I'd start by posting large, sharp pictures here.
Many people here that could tell what's worth getting graded and what's not.

Post some images of the coins here first before sending them to any grading service. We can offer opinions on whether they are worth sending to a TPG or not.

I would not just send these in for grading by myself. I would send these pictures to a major coin auction house and get them to assess your collection and let them help you with the submission. I think they will help you on the hope of a future auction consignment. They will also advise you on security procedures aa they will be knowledgeable and that is one of your concerns.

The major coin auction houses here are:

Stack's
Heritage
Great Collections

Let us know how it turns out.

I am in the same situation as you: I live in Europe and have been collecting U.S coins for over 30 years, focusing on early issues primarily. Most of my collection is not encapsulated - I trust my own judgement when it comes to adding coins to my collection. However, I too worry a little about the day when my heirs have to deal with it. Luckily, both NGC and PCGS have submission point in Europe, but I still hesitate as there is some risk involved in sending the coins in. I have decided to leave it as it is at least for now, but to well document each coin, its variety (if applicable), grade and defects (if applicable), together with an up-to-date value based on actual auction prices realized for similar material. Also, instructions on how to sell, (and who not to sell to), and where to sell if need be. I realize you are even further from the U.S than I am, with possibly fewer outlets (for example auction houses) to sell them - given this and the quality of the coins you have shown us, it seems encapsulation would be beneficial for you and your heirs.
