Can someone please explain the difference between a short nose and long nose? I understand the tree height.

Those photos on Coins and Canada are no good for determining the difference in a long and short nose as they only show the Obverse. I think the difference is on the Reverse where it shows the beaver. The long nose is slightly longer and pointier, the short nose is shorter and stubbier.
If you google 1844 1/2 penny long/short nose, there should be some pictures to help you.

I love these tokens; I was gifted an 1844 half penny when I was about ten.
As mentioned the "nose" is about hte beaver - an unintended die variation.
There are many varieties, I think these are an interesting part of our pre-confederation coinage...

Quote: There are many varieties, I think these are an interesting part of our pre-confederation coinage... couldn't agree more! it's no secret that my focus is on pre 1858 coinage, there are dozens and dozens of designs as opposed to the stale 80+ year old current design, not accounting for the mint's recent habit of releasing a bazillion different "themed" granny candy quarters (no offense to grannies or quarters of course) I can honestly say that I have learned more Canadian history by researching pre confederation coinage than I ever learned in school. Amazing stuff when you start to dig in :)

I especially like the window of, oh lets say 1837-1866... Canadian coins being minted (especially in the case of the 1858+ ones) in anticipation of Canada being a sovereign nation, but without yet attaining that status!
