Hi everyone,

Just found this Draped Bust while metal detecting. It seems there are a few varieties of this coin. It seems to have a strike error.

Thanks

It's slightly mis-aligned, but an amazing metal detecting find never the less!

It's very slightly off center. About a VG details, very crusty 1798 type 1, great find.

A bit off-center. Nice dig!

Very nice, S-167. Dies weren't misaligned, the planchet wasn't centered. These didn't have a close collar so the planchet could easily get off to one side.

Oof, Conder. That's not S-167. It's clearly a type 1 as evidenced by the dentilation style. I'm guessing that was probably a typo though, because it looks nothing like S-167. Judging by the position of the date and LIBERTY, it must be one of the 8/7 overdates, namely S-150 or 151. Those are almost identical but the reverse fraction on this one points to 151. An R4 variety, awesome find!

Nice find. I've had good luck getting green gunk off of coppers with soap and water. Would this be a good suggestion for this particular coin?

Yikes on the cleaning advice... That's a ground found coin. That rich green patina is what we hope they come out of the ground with. If you try to remove it, you will basically have nothing left.

I agree with Coinfrog. Verdi-Care has its place, but it is not meant for coins like this.
