I think that was caused by Master Die Doubling.

It looks like the 1972-S DDO-003:

Keep in mind that these Master Doubled Dies, do have a DDO on the tail of the '2'.
Location for this mint mark on this die number is not the same. So it is not, 003.

I see Bate found one before with the same location. I wonder if he had it attributed or not? Seems as strong as the 003 on V.V. and the 004 on coppercoins and the WDDO-003.

Another image of bate's coin doesn't look as strong. So it maybe just a normal MDD example?
